January in the Library

Those students reading for the Mark Twain and Truman Award books are beginning to think about finishing their reads.  All forms must be turned in by Friday, March 2.  We will be voting for our favorite books the following week.

There will be two more Hot Cocoa Cafes this month.  One is tomorrow, Tuesday, January 24 and Tuesday, January 31.

The last Hot Cocoa Cafe will be Tuesday, February 28.

Hugo Movie

Last Tuesday, our school took 123 students and 8 adults along with the Middle Schol who took 55 students and 4 adults to see the movie Hugo.  It was great to hear students on the bus discussing their thoughts about the movie and the book.  Overwhelmingly the book won.  It’s always great to hear students discuss books and know that they have really read the books and have developed an emotional attachment to it.

Other events this week:  Tuesday – Hoto Cocoa Cafe and Thursday  – TALES.  At TALES we will be painting wooden Christmas ornaments.  TALES will run longer this week, 3:30-5:00.  Cost for the craft will be $3.00.

Hugo Results

123 students will be attending the Hugo Movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  WOW!!!!!  Congratulations to all of the students who made it.  Also thanks to all of the students who participated.  What a great group of readers we have at WIS!

Hugo cont.

The copies of The Invention of Hugo Cabret are flying off the shelves as students try to earn a ticket to see the upcoming movie.  The last day that student will be able to take the test to qualify to go is Wednesday, November 30.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Hugo

Students began taking tests today to see if they could earn a movie ticket.  I want to give away as many tickets as possible!  This Thursday, I will again offer a chance to hear the book and see the book on our big screen in the library.  Remember you must have a signed permission form to attend.

Also don’t forget to bring a snack and drink since this runs from 3:30-6:30.  Come and enjoy a great book, or make sure you are signed up on the waiting list to read the book for yourself.  Copies can only be checked out for three days.

Thank You!

Thanks to all the students, parents and teachers who helped to make this year’s fall book fair the best ever!  We also raised a record amount in the One for Books Challenge!  Way to go!  Money from the One for Books challenge will help children across the United States to get books.  Teachers were also able to pull books off the book fair for their classrooms, and any left over credit was used by the library to purchase additional book from the book fair for the library.

Money from the book fair will be used to purchase additional technology for the library, more books, and will be used to promote reading.

The library’s latest promotion is underway.  Students can earn a ticket to the movie Hugo.  This movie is based on The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.  I borrowed copies from the other elementary libraries so that we have thirteen floating copies.

Students will need to pass a test after reading the book to earn their ticket!

This Thursday, November 10,  and next Thursday, November 17, students can stay after school from 3:30-6:30 PM to hear the book.  Snack are permitted.  They must get a permission form from Mrs. Staley to attend.

Book Fair this Week!

The fall book fair is in full swing!  Don’t forget to send in your One for Books money for the classroom challenge.  The book fair will be open late each evening to accomodate your needs.  You can prepay the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book Cabin Fever. This would make an awesome Christmas gift.  As always thanks for your support!

Book Fair News

Did you know that you can order additional  books from Scholastic that will benefit our library?    If you can’t make it to our fair, go to scholastic.com/schoolbookfairs to order from Friday, October 21 to Friday, November 4 to order books.  There is no shipping or hanling.  The books will be delivered to the school and I will let you know when they arrive.  There are additional titles from preschool to adult that you can purchase that may not be at our fair.  Thanks for your support!

Library Clubs

The first Hot Cocoa Cafe will begin tomorrow after school.  Over 50 students have bought in their permission form!  I ask that students pickup a new form each week, or write on a permission form if they plan on attending all Hot Cocoa Cafes.  This ensures that I will always have enough cocoa made for the crowd.

Our last TALES was well attended with 35 students.  The next TALES will be a Halloween craft.  Forms will be available in the library tomorrow.  If students are interested in attending, they will need to pick up a permission form,  fill it out and return it with their money by Wednesday, October 12.  Our craft will be a miniature black cat candy pail.  Of course the students will be able to fill it with candy before they leave.  A sample of this craft will be available in the library for students.  Cost of materials – $3.00.

Special Note – Five students have paid for new books to replace the ones they damaged with water.  If your student has a water bottle they are carrying in their backpack, I have a suggestion either have them carry it in an outside pocket or in a plastic bag.

Don’t forget Fall Book Fair – Friday, October 21-Thursday, October 27.  If you would like to volunteer your time, give me a call.

Did You Know?

There is just a little over a month until our fall book fair.  Any profits this year will go towards improving technology in the library.  I have currently ordered 14 netbooks which will give a total of 30 computers to be used for research in the library.  This will greatly improve the amount of access teachers will have to use the library for lessons and projects.  I am also working on buying some Kindles and tablets to be used in the library for different communication arts support.
